Wind Chills Expected to Drop Below Zero Across Maryland and Northern Virginia This Weekend

Dangerously cold conditions are expected across the region this weekend, with the National Weather Service warning that wind chills will drop well below zero during overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. this evening through 11 a.m. Saturday. In addition, an Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for Saturday night. Wind chills as low as 5 degrees below zero are expected, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.

The advisory covers Washington, D.C., along with portions of central, northeast, northern, and southern Maryland, as well as central, northern, and northwest Virginia.

Officials warn that exposure to these temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia, particularly if skin is left unprotected. Prolonged exposure to extreme wind chills significantly increases the risk of cold-related injuries.

Residents are urged to take precautions when heading outside, including wearing multiple layers of clothing, along with hats and gloves. Pets should be kept indoors whenever possible, and outdoor animals should have access to warm, dry shelter, adequate food, and unfrozen water.

The National Weather Service also recommends checking in frequently on older family members, friends, and neighbors during the cold stretch. Portable heaters should be used with caution, and generators or grills should never be used indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The coldest conditions are expected overnight, and residents are encouraged to limit time outside and plan ahead for the dangerous cold.
