Illegal Car Rallies Shut Down Across Maryland, Gun Arrest Made

Multiple large-scale illegal car rallies were dismantled Sunday night by the Maryland Car Rally Task Force and partner law enforcement agencies across Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, and Howard counties.

The operation began at 10 pm on February 1 and targeted planned car meets, commonly referred to as “Chipeos,” occurring on public roads, in industrial areas, and in parking lots. High-visibility patrols and enforcement efforts prevented crowds of up to 100 participants from engaging in exhibition driving, disorderly conduct, and roadway shutdowns, with six large-scale driving exhibitions disrupted at locations in Bladensburg, Capitol Heights, Beltsville, Jessup, and Lanham.

During the operation, Maryland State Police arrested two individuals. A 22-year-old man from Lanham was charged with multiple handgun-related offenses after troopers located a loaded firearm in his vehicle. Another 22-year-old man from Brooklyn, Maryland, was arrested on two outstanding assault warrants from Baltimore City. Both individuals were transported to the Prince George’s County Detention Center pending court proceedings. The Maryland Car Rally Task Force includes the Maryland State Police and multiple county and municipal police departments, with the collaborative effort continuing to focus on preventing illegal exhibition driving throughout the region.
