A student was injured after a handgun discharged inside a classroom at Freetown Elementary School in Glen Burnie, MD Tuesday morning, according to Anne Arundel County Police.
Officers responded to the school, located at 7904 Freetown Road, at approximately 8:25 a.m. following reports of a gunshot inside the building. School officials told police that a student had brought a handgun to school and was injured when the weapon discharged inside a classroom.
The classroom teacher secured the firearm, provided aid to the student, and immediately notified school administrators, who contacted police. Other students were present in the classroom at the time of the discharge, but no other injuries were reported.
Once the weapon was secured, police said there was no further threat to student safety. The injured student was transported to a local hospital with what police described as a non-life-threatening injury.
Anne Arundel County Crisis Response services are being made available to families at the school, and additional student support services are being provided.
Detectives with the Northern District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary findings indicate the child obtained the firearm from his residence.
