Four Maryland Communities Rank Among Most Ethnically Diverse Cities in the U.S.

Four communities in Maryland, all right here in Montgomery County, have been named among the top ten most ethnically diverse cities in the United States, according to a newly released 2026 report from personal-finance company WalletHub.

The rankings place Germantown, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, and Rockville in the national top ten, highlighting Montgomery County’s long-standing role as one of the most culturally diverse regions in the country.

To compile the report, WalletHub analyzed more than 500 of the largest U.S. cities using three primary measures of diversity: ethno-racial diversity, linguistic diversity, and birthplace diversity.

Germantown ranked first overall in the nation, earning an ethnic diversity score of 72.83. The community placed first in ethno-racial diversity, fifth in linguistic diversity, and 100th in birthplace diversity, giving it the highest overall score nationwide.

Gaithersburg followed closely behind, ranking third overall with an ethnic diversity score of 72.55. The city ranked ninth in ethno-racial diversity and second in linguistic diversity, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most multilingual communities in the country.

Silver Spring ranked fourth overall, continuing its long history of cultural diversity driven by international migration, a wide range of languages spoken at home, and a racially diverse population spread across multiple neighborhoods.

Rockville rounded out the Montgomery County presence in the top ten, ranking ninth overall and fifth among small cities nationwide. Rockville placed 23rd in ethno-racial diversity, 10th in linguistic diversity, and 38th in birthplace diversity, reflecting a strong balance across all three categories used in the analysis.

Together, the four Montgomery County communities account for nearly half of the nation’s top ten most ethnically diverse cities, underscoring how deeply diversity is woven into the fabric of the region. From language and culture to food, festivals, and community life, the rankings reflect realities long familiar to residents who call these places home.
