An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for the region by the National Weather Service (NWS) with dangerously cold conditions expected from late Friday night through Sunday morning.
NWS Forecasters warn that wind chills could drop to between zero and 10 degrees below zero east of the Blue Ridge, with wind chills as low as 15 degrees below zero possible west of the Blue Ridge. The watch includes Washington, DC, much of Maryland, northern and western Virginia, and parts of West Virginia.
The coldest conditions are expected overnight and into the early morning hours, though wind chills are forecast to remain at or below zero throughout the day on Saturday due to a combination of strong winds and very cold temperatures.
These conditions pose a serious risk for frostbite and hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken. Prolonged exposure to the cold, especially with unprotected skin, can become dangerous in a short period of time.
Residents are urged to dress in layers if heading outside, including hats, gloves, and face coverings to protect exposed skin. Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible, and outdoor animals should have access to warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
People are also encouraged to check on older family members, friends, and neighbors during the cold spell. Officials remind residents to use space heaters safely and never operate generators or grills indoors.
Additional updates will be provided as the forecast becomes clearer and the watch potentially transitions to a warning.
