Rockville Nonprofit Rescues Senior Yorkie Found in Garbage in DC

A senior Yorkshire terrier now known as Apple is recovering after surviving an act of extreme cruelty, thanks to the intervention of Rockville-based nonprofit Miri’s Haven Senior Dog Rescue.

Last Thursday, the small dog was discovered inside the garbage of a Washington, D.C. apartment complex after being thrown down a trash chute. She was found malnourished, disabled, and severely neglected. A resident who came across her contacted animal control, and Miri’s Haven stepped in to take custody and provide immediate care.

When Apple arrived at the rescue, she was severely underweight with almost no muscle tone. Her lower back, hips, and knees showed significant damage, leaving her able to walk primarily using her front legs. She was also covered in heavily matted fur, urine, and feces, indicating prolonged neglect.

Despite the trauma she endured, those caring for her say Apple’s spirit has remained remarkably intact. Rescue volunteers describe her as joyful and affectionate, responding warmly to kindness and attention. Her tail has continued to wag, and she enjoys being pet and comforted, even as she begins the slow process of recovery.

Apple is now safe in a foster home in Rockville, where she is receiving warmth, care, and close monitoring. While her immediate needs are being met, her medical care is expected to be extensive and costly due to her injuries and overall condition.

Miri’s Haven, which focuses on rescuing and caring for senior dogs, is entirely volunteer-run. The organization says that all donations go directly toward the care of dogs like Apple. Those interested in following and supporting her recovery can do so via Facebook and Instagram and contribute through the rescue’s listed Venmo and PayPal options (@mirishaven).

For now, Apple’s days are filled with rest, gentle care, and the attention she was long denied. Her rescuers say her resilience is a powerful reminder of the impact compassion can have, even after unimaginable cruelty.
