Shelter at Capacity, Offering Special Adoption Rates for Big Dogs

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center will host a reduced-fee adoption event for dogs weighing more than 40 pounds on Saturday, February 14, and Sunday, February 15, as the shelter works to find homes for nearly 80 large dogs currently in its care.

Officials say the shelter is at critical capacity and is urging residents who have been considering adoption to take advantage of the special event. Adoption fees will be discounted based on age, with dogs under six months available for $75, dogs six months and older for $50, and dogs over seven years old for $37.50.

All adoptions are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and are completed the same day. Visitors are encouraged to come prepared to take their new pet home by bringing a leash and a collar or harness. Wait times may occur depending on demand.

The shelter is located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road in Derwood. Regular adoption hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from noon to 7:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5:00 pm. The shelter is closed on Wednesdays.

MCASAC is operated by the County’s Office of Animal Services and serves as the county’s only open-admission municipal shelter, providing care for homeless, abused, and neglected animals. Through adoptions, education, and outreach, the center promotes responsible pet ownership and community involvement.
