The community is raising funds to support a Damascus family after a house fire displaced them and left both parents injured.
The Suarez family lost their home and belongings early Sunday morning, February 8, when a fire broke out in a second-floor bedroom of their townhouse on Shelldrake Court off Valley Park Drive and spread to the attic and main level. According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire was ruled accidental and was caused by an open flame placed too close to combustible materials. Two young children in the home alerted adults to the fire, allowing all four family members to escape.
Both adults were injured while attempting to fight the fire and were transported for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation. Their 6-year-old twins were not physically injured. Fire officials estimated damage at approximately $400,000, and a family of four was displaced. About 60 firefighters responded and worked in below-freezing conditions to bring the fire under control.
A fundraiser has been established to assist with temporary housing, essential belongings, repairs, and living expenses. Organizers said Mr. Suarez is currently unable to work due to his injuries, and the family, longtime Damascus residents, is seeking community support during their recovery.
