Leul Dawit and Reemey Ghermay Named Finalists For Student Board Seat

Leul Dawit, a sophomore at Northwood High School, and Reemey Ghermay, a junior at Walter Johnson High School, have been named the two finalists for the 49th Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) in Montgomery County.

Dawit and Ghermay advanced from a pool of eight candidates following the SMOB Nominating Convention held on Feb. 11 at Watkins Mill High School. More than 400 middle and high school delegates attended the convention and cast votes to select the finalists.nCountywide SMOB elections will be held on Wednesday, Apr. 22. All secondary school students in Montgomery County are eligible to vote.

Dawit currently serves as a Field Organization Deputy for MoCo for Change, a certified workshop presenter for the Maryland Association of Student Councils, and Environmental Education Deputy for Eco MoCo. He is also a Student F.A.I.R. Student Leadership Coordinator and serves as Historian for the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association.

Ghermay is the President of the Walter Johnson High School Class of 2027 and serves as a Boundary Deputy on the SMOB Advisory Council, as well as a Legislative Affairs Deputy for the Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association. She previously served as Vice President of the Montgomery County Junior Council.

The student elected in April will represent Montgomery County Public Schools students on the Board of Education for the upcoming term.
