A fatal crash in Wicomico County Wednesday night claimed the life of an 18 year old Rockville resident and left another Montgomery County teen seriously injured.
Maryland State Police identified the driver as Matthew Garcia, 18, of Rockville. Garcia was operating a Honda Civic that was involved in a single vehicle crash just before 9pm in the Fruitland area. He was flown by helicopter to a trauma center, where he later died from his injuries.
Two passengers were also inside the vehicle. Andy Fon Koh, 18, of Takoma Park, was flown to a shock trauma center for treatment. A third passenger, Eyuael Zewdie, 18, of Washington, D.C., was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
According to investigators, the crash occurred around 8:41pm on South Division Street near Coulbourn Mill. Police say the vehicle failed to stop at a posted stop sign, entered the intersection, and struck the top of a guardrail before coming to rest in Coulbourn Mill Pond. Speeding is believed to have been a contributing factor.
Roadways in the area were closed for more than four hours as investigators worked the scene. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation at the request of the Fruitland Police Department.
