Maryland’s Five Largest Malls

Updated with current rankings

Maryland is home to some of the largest shopping destinations in the Mid-Atlantic. Based on gross leasable area, these are the five biggest malls in the state as of 2026, ranked from fifth largest to largest.

Just missed: White Marsh Mall in White Marsh comes in at number six, with approximately 1.2 million square feet of gross leasable space. A long-standing staple of the Baltimore area, the mall is part of a massive retail corridor that includes an adjacent IKEA and The Avenue at White Marsh. Its classic two-level layout is anchored by stores such as Boscov’s, JCPenney, and Macy’s, making it a reliable regional shopping destination.

Westfield Montgomery in Bethesda ranks fifth at roughly 1.223 million square feet. The mall caters to an upscale demographic and is anchored by Nordstrom and Macy’s. A major expansion in the late 2010s added a luxury dining terrace and a modern movie theater, helping reposition the center as both a shopping and dining destination.

The Mall in Columbia is a heavyweight in the Maryland retail scene, spanning approximately 1.4 million square feet which comes in fourth. Often called the “Main Street” of Columbia’s town center, it houses over 200 specialty shops and is anchored by Nordstrom, Macy’s, and JCPenney. Unlike many traditional malls that have struggled in recent years, Columbia has successfully pivoted toward “experiential” retail. It replaced its former Sears wing with a Main Event entertainment center and a Lidl grocery store, while also featuring a popular 70,000SF outdoor “lifestyle” plaza with high-traffic dining like The Cheesecake Factory and Maggiano’s.

Annapolis Mall in Annapolis takes the third spot with an estimated 1.416 million square feet. Formerly known as Westfield Annapolis, it is Maryland’s largest traditional enclosed regional mall (meaning no Costco, Target, or grocery anchor attached). The property is known for its higher-end feel and for unique amenities such as a public library branch and a boutique-style cinema.

Westfield Wheaton ranks second with approximately 1.6 million square feet of space, making it one of Montgomery County’s largest retail hubs. The mall stands out for its unusual and highly practical anchor mix, which includes not only traditional department stores but also a Costco and a Target built directly into the mall structure, drawing shoppers looking for both everyday essentials and traditional mall retail.

Arundel Mills in Hanover is the largest mall in Maryland by a wide margin, with roughly 1.93 million square feet of gross leasable area. While often categorized as an outlet mall, it functions more like a full-scale entertainment complex, featuring more than 200 stores alongside major attractions such as Live! Casino & Hotel, Medieval Times, and a large Egyptian-themed movie theater. It has recently become home to a new Toys R Us and Wayfair Outlet.
