Minds in Motion Child Care, the largest Black owned child care business in Montgomery County, will host a free Black History Month celebration on Friday, February 20, from 7pm to 9pm at Watkins Mill High School in Montgomery Village. The community wide event will feature a headline performance by nationally acclaimed step troupe Step Afrika!, along with free dinner for all attendees.
The annual celebration is designed as a family friendly evening highlighting Black excellence through performance, education, and community connection. Step Afrika! will lead the program with its signature mix of traditional African dance and contemporary stepping. Additional performances will include step and jazz routines by local artists, poetry, Black history trivia, gift card giveaways, and more. The evening will be emceed by Ricky PlatinumEnt of WKYS 93.9 FM.
County Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe Sayles praised the event as a meaningful way to honor Black History Month and those who paved the way for future generations. She said the celebration recognizes Black excellence while reinforcing the importance of leadership, equity, and opportunity, especially for young people. Sayles emphasized that Black history is American history and that events like this help ensure that legacy is carried forward with pride and purpose.
C. Brian Williams, founder and executive producer of Step Afrika!, said the group is honored to return to the DMV during Black History Month while touring nationally. He noted that performing for the local community that helped shape the organization makes the event especially meaningful.
LaTisha Gasaway Paul, co owner of Minds in Motion Child Care, said the celebration is about creating joyful and intentional space for children and families to connect with their culture. She said the goal is for every child who attends to feel pride in their history and confidence in the legacy they carry forward.
The event is supported by the Juneteenth Scotland Foundation, which works year round to preserve and uplift Black history and heritage across the region. Organizers encourage the entire community to attend and take part in the celebration.
The event will take place at Watkins Mill High School in Montgomery Village. Free parking is available on site. Admission and dinner are both free.
