NBC 4 meteorologist Doug Kammerer is flagging growing confidence in a significant winter storm for Sunday into Monday, even as major forecast models remain far apart on snowfall totals.
The latest runs of the GFS and the European model both now show an impactful storm affecting the region, with impacts into Monday. The disagreement lies in just how severe it becomes. The GFS continues to depict a high-end scenario, calling for 10 to 15 inches of snow in the immediate area and extreme totals of up to 30 inches for parts of Maryland east of the Chesapeake Bay. The European model remains much more conservative, showing a widespread 4 to 8 inches locally.
Kammerer acknowledged the uncertainty but emphasized the shared signal between the models. “Two days away from the storm and the American model and the European models are still very far apart from each other,” he wrote. “One thing has changed. They both show an impactful storm now and Monday morning will be impacted. I’m talking about this today at 3pm. American model on the left still shows a near blizzard along the coast, while the Euro is still weaker on the right.”
The takeaway for now is increasing confidence that snow will significantly affect travel and daily routines late Sunday into Monday, even if exact totals remain unclear. Forecasts are expected to continue shifting as the storm approaches.
