Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded around 12:00 pm Sunday to the 11400 block of Lockwood Drive, off New Hampshire Avenue in White Oak, for a reported fire at the Lockwood Apartments.
Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke showing from a three-level garden-style apartment building and located a bedroom fire on the terrace level, which was quickly extinguished.
According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, approximately 55 firefighters were on scene. Several pets, including three dogs and one cat, were found inside the apartment and did not survive. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported. Crews operated in rainy conditions with temperatures around 35 degrees.
