Storm Leaves About 200 Downed Trees and Power Lines; Residents Reminded to Clear Sidewalks

Montgomery County officials say the recent winter storm left snow accumulations of up to 6.9 inches in some northern areas, along with wind gusts reaching 40 mph.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) reported about 200 downed trees or wires across the County and is working with Pepco on response efforts. Crews have begun plowing residential roads and clearing roughly 100 miles of County-maintained sidewalks, with all 5,400 lane miles expected to be completed by late this evening. Ride On buses are operating on a regular schedule, though riders are encouraged to check for possible delays. Free storm-related parking in garages in Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Wheaton will end at noon today, Monday, February 23.

Officials are reminding residents to clear sidewalks in front of their properties during daylight hours, as temperatures are expected to drop overnight and refreeze snow. Property owners are required to clear sidewalks within 24 hours after snowfall ends. MCDOT prioritizes primary and emergency routes before residential streets, and service requests for plowing should be submitted after initial operations are complete through the County’s Snow Portal. During plowing operations, MC311 is not accepting snow-clearing requests but is handling reports of downed trees. Residents can also report non-emergency roadway hazards to police after hours and are encouraged to sign up for Alert Montgomery for real-time weather and emergency updates.
