A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of central and western Maryland (including all of Montgomery County) and northern and northwest Virginia, with mixed precipitation expected from late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
The advisory is in effect from 10pm Monday through 10am Tuesday. Forecasts call for snow accumulations of up to one inch, along with ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch.
Some locations may see up to an inch of snow between late Monday morning and late afternoon, though roadway impacts during the daytime hours are expected to be limited. The greater concern for travel comes overnight, when precipitation is expected to transition into a wintry mix.
Forecasters say precipitation overnight may briefly fall as snow or sleet but will primarily be freezing rain, creating the potential for slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning commute.
Precipitation is expected to change to plain rain by mid morning Tuesday as temperatures rise above freezing. Drivers are urged to use caution, especially during the overnight hours and early Tuesday morning, and to allow extra time for travel.
