Over 50 local companies were awarded $7.5 million from Montgomery County last year, demonstrating the Government’s core priority in further supporting its thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. The funded projects range from off-the-shelf CAR T Cells that target solid tumors to nanophotonic imaging platform for in vivo imaging, advanced microelectronics for spacecraft instrumentation, high-energy-density capacitors for defense and space, and sustainable bio-fungicides from natural products to combat fungal diseases.
“The Technology Innovation Fund exemplifies Montgomery County’s commitment to supporting genuine innovation with its flexibility and risk tolerance,” said Sanhe Hu, founder of EasyCloudScale, a recipient of the Technology Innovation Fund. “This support has enabled EasyScaleCloud to rapidly iterate through multiple product concepts at controlled costs—validating what works and pivoting when needed—while building the foundation to create high-skill technology jobs that will contribute to the County’s growing tech ecosystem.”
County officials said the grants are part of a broader effort to ensure entrepreneurs have access to critical resources needed to grow their firms and bring innovations to market. The Founders Fund specifically targets entrepreneurs from historically underrepresented backgrounds, aiming to reduce barriers to capital and expand opportunities for growth. Recipients will use the support to further develop commercially viable technologies across sectors including biotech, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. “These programs demonstrate the County’s commitment to nurturing our ecosystem and building a strong, diverse and inclusive economy,” said Jared Smith, president and CEO of MCEDC.
In addition to grants like the Technology Innovation and Founders Funds, Montgomery County offers other programs designed to help startups at various stages of growth. The MOVE Grant provides financial assistance to help small firms secure their first commercial lease or expand their existing workspace, with more than $6.1 million awarded since the program’s inception in 2014. The County’s network of Business Innovation Centers, which offer collaborative workspaces, mentorship opportunities, and networking resources for early-stage companies, is also one of the many resources available to small businesses. Combined with public and private sector support, these resources are central to maintaining a supportive entrepreneurial environment, particularly for the small businesses that make up more than 95 percent of the County’s business base and fuel our local economy.
Montgomery County’s efforts come amid broader regional initiatives to nurture innovation and diversify local economic activity. The County’s proximity to major research institutions and federal agencies, coupled with an established base of global technology and life sciences companies, has helped foster an environment for startups seeking a steady talent pipeline and supportive infrastructure, contributing to a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem.
