The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) reports overall crime in the department’s 3rd District, which covers Silver Spring, has decreased by 8 percent compared to 2024.
Several categories saw significant declines, including assaults involving guns, down 53 percent; carjackings, down 35 percent; theft of auto parts, down 34 percent; and auto theft, down 16 percent. Robbery decreased by 9.6 percent, and weapons discharges dropped by 18 percent. Homicides remained unchanged, with nine reported in both 2024 and 2025. Crimes against persons, including assaults, homicides, and sex offenses, also decreased by more than 9 percent.
Police officials attribute the reductions to proactive policing strategies and increased partnerships with businesses and community organizations. Efforts included increased patrols in the downtown Silver Spring area, coordination with Metro Transit Police around transit stations, and a holiday retail task force launched by Third District Commander Jason Cokinos to address theft during the busy shopping season. Officers have also worked with Montgomery County’s Department of Health and Human Services to connect members of the unhoused community with resources.
