Montgomery Parks Expands Open Parkway Hours for Spring and Summer

Montgomery Parks is expanding the hours for its popular Open Parkways program as daylight saving time begins this weekend, giving residents more opportunities to enjoy car-free roads for walking, biking, skating, and other outdoor activities.

Beginning Friday, March 6, several parkway segments will close to vehicle traffic for extended periods through the spring and summer, creating safe spaces for the community to get outside, stay active, and take advantage of longer days and warmer weather.

Under the spring and summer schedule, Beach Drive between Knowles Avenue and Cedar Lane (2.2 miles) and Sligo Creek Parkway between Old Carroll Avenue and Piney Branch Road will be closed to vehicles from 9am Saturday through 6pm Sunday.

A longer stretch of Sligo Creek Parkway, between Forest Glen Road and University Boulevard West, will be closed from 9am Friday through 6pm Sunday.

Montgomery Parks notes that while gate closures are scheduled to be completed by the listed start times, the reopening process begins at the end time and may take up to 30 minutes to fully reopen the roadways to traffic.

Officials also note that hours may change on federal holidays. Residents using the Open Parkways are encouraged to share the space and remain mindful of others while enjoying the car-free routes.
