A bedroom fire displaced four adults Friday evening in a Gaithersburg townhouse, but quick actions by the occupant and working smoke alarms helped prevent the fire from spreading, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters were dispatched at 6:08pm to the 11100 block of Black Forest Way near Wheatfield Terrace for a reported fire in a second-floor bedroom of a two-story middle-of-row townhouse.
Crews arrived to find a room and contents fire in the bedroom. One occupant had already evacuated the home before firefighters arrived. By 6:16pm, the fire had been reported out and firefighters began checking for extension. The fire was ultimately confined to the townhouse where it started and no injuries were reported.
According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the home had working smoke alarms and the occupant closed the bedroom door while exiting, which helped prevent the fire from spreading and limited damage.
Fire officials estimate the damage at approximately $40,000. Four adults have been displaced as a result of the fire.
