Woman Sentenced to 35 Years in Rockville Murder Stabbing

A Montgomery County judge sentenced Sophia Negroponte, 33, of Washington, D.C., to 35 years in prison for the 2020 killing of Yousuf Rasmussen.

The sentence was handed down in the Montgomery County Circuit Court by Judge Terrence McGann after a jury in November 2025 found Negroponte guilty of second-degree murder during a retrial. Her original 2023 conviction on the same charge had been overturned by the Maryland Court of Appeals.

According to investigators with the Montgomery County Department of Police, officers responded on February 13, 2020, to a residence in the 400 block of West Montgomery Avenue in Rockville for a reported stabbing. Rasmussen, 24, was found inside the home suffering from a cutting wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said Rasmussen and Negroponte were acquaintances and had been involved in a disagreement inside the residence before the stabbing.
