A Gaithersburg High School student has been arrested after police say he brought a loaded handgun onto school property Tuesday morning.
According to the Gaithersburg Police Department, officers responded to Gaithersburg High School around 9:15 am on March 10 after school staff received an anonymous tip from a community member reporting that a specific student was in possession of a handgun.
School staff, Montgomery County Public Schools security personnel, and responding officers quickly located the student. During a search of the student’s backpack, officers recovered a loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun equipped with an extended magazine and an obliterated serial number.
Police say the 17 year old student was taken into custody and transported to the Central Processing Unit. He is being charged as an adult with dangerous weapon on school property, handgun on person, loaded handgun on person, minor in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to students, staff, or the community. Police credited the community member who provided the anonymous tip, saying it helped officers quickly and safely resolve the situation.
Police said a photo of the suspect will not be released because he is a juvenile, even though he is being charged as an adult.
