Montgomery Parks has announced the opening of a new skate park at Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park in Clarksburg, adding a major new recreational amenity in the northern part of Montgomery County.
The 12,000SF skate park was designed by Spohn Ranch Skateparks and includes a mix of bowl and street-style features intended for skateboarders, in-line skaters, scooters, and BMX riders of all ages and skill levels.
“Parks staff met with hundreds of skateboarders and skateboard enthusiasts as we developed this new skate park to ensure that it has everything a skateboarder could dream of and more,” said Montgomery Parks Director Miti Figueredo. “Now that it’s open, we are so excited to see how skateboarders put it to good use.”
The park features a mellow peanut-shaped bowl along with a street section designed for flow and technical tricks. Elements include rails, ledges, quarter pipes, and other obstacles that allow riders to link together lines throughout the park. Key features include:
• Tiered peanut-shaped bowl
• Quarter pipes and radius wedges
• Bank to slappy curb with brick pattern
• Stair set with handrail and grind ledge
• Rails and ledges including a flat bar, rainbow rail, and single kinked round rail
• Volcano jump
• Euro gap
The skate park is part of a larger renovation of Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park. Improvements across the park will also include a new playground, carousel, walking trails, and additional upgrades.
A ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the full park renovation is scheduled for May. “This new skate park at Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park is going to be a great new recreational amenity in the upcounty,” said Maryland State Senator Craig Zucker. “As a former skateboarder, I know it’s a great sport and good recreation for our youth. I’m proud to have helped fund this park along with my colleagues in District 14.”
Montgomery Parks is also planning a video submission contest to celebrate the skate park opening. Beginning April 1, skaters will be able to submit videos of their best tricks and edits filmed at the new park. The winner will be selected by the Montgomery Parks Skate Park Design Workgroup and announced during the park’s grand opening celebration in May.
The Ovid Hazen Wells facility becomes the fourth skate park operated by Montgomery Parks and the first located in the northern portion of the county.
