School Early Release Prediction for Monday, March 16th

The National Weather Service and Storm Prediction Center have warned that severe thunderstorms capable of producing widespread damaging winds and tornadoes are expected across parts of the Mid-Atlantic on Monday.

As of 5:45pm Sunday evening, several nearby school systems had already made decisions to dismiss students early on Monday. Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Washington County Public Schools, and neighboring Frederick County Public Schools have each announced early dismissal plans ahead of the approaching storm system.

Earlier Sunday, MCPS said it was closely monitoring the forecast and would provide updates if operational changes became necessary. “MCPS is monitoring the potential for a strong storm for Monday, March 16, and will announce any updates concerning operations, including any cancellations of activities or an early dismissal on Monday morning,” the district shared.

While the district indicated a decision could come Monday morning, the official MoCoSnow prediction is that there will be an early release. I wouldn’t be surprised if a call was made at some point on Sunday as forecasts continue to highlight the potential for dangerous afternoon conditions.

If storms arrive during the afternoon hours as expected, dismissing schools early would allow buses to complete routes before the most intense weather moves through the region. Families are encouraged to monitor MCPS communications for any official updates regarding school operations.
