MCPS Shares Reminder of Calendar Changes as District Seeks Earlier End to School Year

Montgomery County Public Schools has shared a reminder of the adjustment to the school calendar for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year as the district continues working with the Maryland State Department of Education to address missed instructional days caused by winter weather.

In a message to families shared again on social media on Monday, MCPS said April 15, which had previously been scheduled as a non-instructional day for teacher grading and planning at the end of the marking period, will now be an early-release day for students. The district says the marking period will still end on April 14, but report card distribution will be delayed until April 20.

MCPS also confirmed that March 20 will remain a non-instructional day for students, following a Board of Education vote on February 19. Officials say the changes are part of an effort to preserve instructional time during the current school year while also asking the state to waive the requirement to add additional make-up days at the end of the year.

Earlier this year, several winter weather closures forced MCPS to cancel school multiple times. Under Maryland regulations, those missed days must be made up through designated make-up days or by extending the school year. As a result, MCPS previously announced that the last day of school would move to June 26.

School officials say the new adjustments are intended to add instructional time within the existing calendar while the district works with the state in hopes of avoiding a school year that stretches further into late June. MCPS noted that additional updates about the calendar may be shared before Spring Break.
