Two restaurants with Maryland locations in Montgomery County have been named semifinalists for the RAMMY Awards’ “Casual Restaurant of the Year,” highlighting a pair of concepts that bring distinct international flavors to the local dining scene.
ala restaurant, known for its creative cooking inspired by the vibrant flavors of the Levantine region, earned recognition following the debut of its second location in March 2024 at 4948 Fairmont Avenue in Bethesda. The Bethesda restaurant features seating for 90 guests indoors and an additional 30 on its patio, offering a warm and inviting setting that reflects its colorful menu.
Owner Deniz Gulluoglu, who lives in the Cabin John area with her family, said opening in Bethesda was a natural next step for the growing brand. “We have always wanted to open a second restaurant closer to our home, in our community,” Gulluoglu said. “Bethesda restaurants offer an array of culinary flavors, and we are thrilled to offer the community ala Bethesda, an exceptional Levantine dining experience, in the heart of Bethesda.”
Also named a semifinalist is Duke’s Grocery, a London-inspired gastropub that expanded into Maryland with its Potomac Village location in April 2025. The opening marked the brand’s first venture outside of Washington, D.C., bringing with it a menu that blends British pub culture with elevated comfort food.
Duke’s is perhaps best known for its “Proper Burger,” which has consistently been ranked among the top burgers in D.C. and has earned multiple “Best Burger in DC” titles. The Potomac menu also features a wide range of offerings including oversized “sarnies” (sandwiches), seasonal cocktails, hearty salads, local beers, and a strong wine selection. Popular dishes include the white truffle mac and cheese, fish and chips, and a full English breakfast served during brunch.
The RAMMY Awards, presented annually by the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington, celebrate excellence in the region’s restaurant and foodservice industry, with semifinalists representing some of the top dining destinations across the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. Both restaurants have DC locations.
