Abbott Elementary Renewed for Season 6, Stars Montgomery County Native Lisa Ann Walter

ABC has officially renewed Abbott Elementary for a sixth season, and for Montgomery County, the hit comedy’s continued success comes with a strong local connection.

Among the show’s standout stars is Silver Spring native Lisa Ann Walter, who plays second grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti. Her “tough-as-nails” South Philadelphia personality has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved characters on the show, bringing a familiar East Coast edge that resonates with viewers across the region.

Walter was born in Silver Spring on August 3, 1963, and grew up in Montgomery County. She graduated from Blair High School in 1979 before going on to earn a theater degree from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC in 1983. Photos of her during her time at Blair can be seen below, courtesy of her former teacher Carole Chansky Goodman (who is also Blake High School’s first ever principal)

Her path to television success began in stand-up comedy, where she spent five years performing before landing her own Fox sitcom, My Wildest Dreams. She followed that with a starring role in the ABC series Life’s Work in 1996, portraying an assistant district attorney in Baltimore. Over the years, she has also appeared in several films and hosted a radio talk show in Los Angeles.

Many viewers still recognize Walter from her role as Chessy in the beloved film The Parent Trap, but her portrayal of Melissa Schemmenti has introduced her to a new generation of fans.

Since premiering in 2021, Abbott Elementary has become one of television’s most celebrated comedies. Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, the mockumentary-style series follows a group of dedicated teachers working at a fictional, underfunded elementary school in Philadelphia. Despite constant challenges, the teachers remain committed to helping their students succeed.

The show has earned 30 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won four, including major honors for Brunson and a Best Supporting Actress win for Sheryl Lee Ralph. New episodes of the series air on Wednesdays on ABC and stream the next day on Hulu and Disney+.
