Deck Fire Displaces 11 People Sunday Evening

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded to a working house fire Sunday evening in the 3900 block of Bryant Park Circle in Burtonsville, where a fire that started on a deck extended into the home.

According to MCFRS, firefighters arrived to find flames involving the deck with extension into the residence. Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire and keep it confined to the unit of origin, preventing any further spread inside the home.

One resident who uses a wheelchair was safely assisted from the home by firefighters. MCFRS said no injuries were reported. Chief spokesperson Pete Piringer said the fire displaced 9 adults, 2 children, and 1 dog. Firefighters remained on scene completing salvage and overhaul operations after the fire was extinguished.

MCFRS also used the incident to remind residents that deck fires can spread quickly into homes. Officials urged people to keep grills and other heat sources away from structures, clear decks of combustible materials, and make sure smoke alarms are working on every level of the home.
