The City of Takoma Park announced it has been awarded three grants from the Maryland Energy Administration totaling nearly $500,000, funding efforts aimed at improving energy efficiency in multifamily housing and municipal buildings.
The largest award, a $400,000 Residential Energy Equity Grant, will support electrification upgrades for Phase II grantees in the City’s Multifamily Building Improvement Grant program. The MFBIG program is currently accepting Phase II applications through Thursday, April 30.
Takoma Park also received a $32,000 grant through the Energy Equity Community Block Grant program, which will be used to fund energy audits for Phase I grantees in the upcoming fall round of MFBIG.
A third grant, totaling $50,000 through the Local Government Energy Modernization program, will fund energy audits at all four of the City’s municipal buildings.
City officials said the grants will play an important role in helping advance electrification in Takoma Park’s aging multifamily buildings, supporting healthier and more fuel-efficient homes while aligning with the City’s climate goals. The Local Government Energy Modernization funding will also allow the City to conduct a comprehensive review of its own facilities and create a roadmap for future energy efficiency improvements.
