Education Unions Plan Rally Urging Full Funding of MCPS Budget

Local education unions are planning a rally in Rockville to urge county leaders to fully fund Montgomery County Public Schools’ upcoming operating budget.

The Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA), SEIU Local 500, and the Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP) announced they will hold the event on Wednesday, April 8 at 5pm outside the Montgomery County Council building at 100 Maryland Avenue.

Organizers say the rally is intended to call on the County Council to approve full funding for the County Executive’s proposed MCPS operating budget for the 2026-2027 school year. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor is expected to speak, along with representatives from each of the three unions.

Union leaders say the proposal is critical to maintaining resources and support for students and staff across the school system. “At its core, this budget is about ensuring every student has what they need to succeed,” said MCAAP President Dr. Christine Handy in a statement. “Our students deserve the resources, supports, and opportunities necessary to thrive.”

SEIU Local 500 President Pia Morrison emphasized the role of school staff in maintaining daily operations and supporting students, particularly as schools face increasing needs. MCEA President David Stein also pointed to past funding decisions by the County Council, expressing confidence that leaders will again prioritize investment in education.

The County Council will ultimately determine the final funding level for MCPS as part of its budget process.
