Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews responded to a significant apartment fire near Rio in Gaithersburg Thursday night, resulting in multiple rescues and several families being displaced.
According to MCFRS chief spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire was reported around 8:50pm at Sawyer Flats, a four-story apartment building located at 9800 Mahogany Drive near Rio Boulevard and Washingtonian. Numerous 911 calls were received, and firefighters arrived within minutes to find heavy fire conditions, with flames showing from the third and fourth floors.
The incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, bringing approximately 85 firefighters to the scene. Crews conducted rescues during the operation, including removing an occupant and a dog from the top floor. One adult was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries have been reported.
As of approximately 10:30pm, officials say the fire has been extinguished. However, several families have been displaced as a result of the damage. Firefighters remain on scene as crews continue to monitor conditions and assist affected residents.
