MCPS Reminds Families of April 15 Early Release Day Amid Calendar Changes

Montgomery County Public Schools is reminding families and staff of a key calendar update tied to this year’s weather-related schedule changes. Wednesday, April 15 will now be an early release day for students, serving as one of the district’s designated inclement weather make-up days.

The adjustment comes as part of broader calendar changes following multiple winter weather closures earlier this year. While the third marking period will still end on April 14, there will be a slight delay in grading and report card distribution. According to MCPS:

  • Grade reporting will be completed by April 20
  • Report cards will be available in ParentVUE on April 24
  • Paper copies will be distributed by April 30

Earlier this spring, MCPS confirmed that the last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 18, 2026, after receiving approval from the Maryland State Board of Education to reduce the required number of instructional days.

The district eliminated three instructional days from the calendar and converted April 15 into an early release day, while still exceeding the state’s required instructional hour minimums. Officials noted that extending the school year further into late June could lead to increased absenteeism and logistical challenges for families.

The final week of school will run on a normal schedule before ending with an early release:

  • Monday, June 15: Full day
  • Tuesday, June 16: Full day
  • Wednesday, June 17: Full day
  • Thursday, June 18: Early release (last day of school)

Friday, June 19, which falls on Juneteenth, will remain a systemwide closure.
