A Poolesville High School student has been named a National STEM Champion, earning a spot among some of the top young innovators in the country. Sathvik Dasari was selected as one of just 55 students nationwide recognized through the National STEM Challenge, securing an invitation to the National STEM Festival, which will take place in Washington, D.C. from June 24-27.
As part of the honor, Dasari and a guardian will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the festival, where he will present his work to leaders in business, government, and academia, as well as the public during the event’s Build Day expo. The National STEM Festival is considered one of the most competitive early talent platforms in the world, with an acceptance rate of less than five percent. This year’s group of champions represents students from 47 states and four U.S. territories, with projects focused on areas including healthcare, energy, and emerging technologies.
Dasari’s project centers on a low-cost, mobile air quality monitoring system designed to provide more localized pollution data. His device uses sensors and machine learning to measure air quality at the neighborhood level, offering a more flexible alternative to traditional fixed monitoring stations. Organizers say the goal of the festival is to connect these young innovators with decision-makers who can help elevate and expand their work.
“The 2026 Champions have raised the bar for what we thought was possible at this level,” said Jenny Buccos, Founder and CEO of EXPLR and Co-Director of the National STEM Festival. “They’re already building the technologies, cures, and systems America needs.” During the festival, Dasari will have the opportunity to showcase his project, connect with fellow students from across the country, and engage with leaders across multiple industries.
