Regional Crackdown on Distracted Driving Results in 420 Violations

A coordinated traffic enforcement effort across Montgomery County and surrounding jurisdictions resulted in hundreds of stops and violations as agencies focused on improving roadway safety during Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The multi-agency initiative took place on April 8, targeting major roadways including Georgia Avenue, New Hampshire Avenue, University Boulevard, and MD-200. The effort brought together local and state law enforcement agencies in a unified push to identify and address dangerous driving behaviors, with a particular emphasis on distracted driving.

Participating agencies included Montgomery County Police units, Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Natural Resources Police, and local departments from Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Takoma Park. During the operation, officers conducted 302 traffic stops and issued a total of 420 violations. In addition, 18 Safety Equipment Repair Orders were issued for vehicle-related issues requiring correction.

Commercial vehicle enforcement was also a key component of the initiative. Officers conducted nine inspections, resulting in 67 violations. Six drivers and four vehicles were placed out of service due to safety concerns. Violations observed throughout the detail included speeding, distracted driving, failure to move over, illegal window tint, driving with a suspended license, registration and tag violations, disobeying traffic control devices, and pedestrian and crosswalk-related offenses.

The enforcement effort is part of a broader, ongoing strategy to reduce crashes and improve safety on some of the region’s busiest corridors. Officials say coordinated initiatives like this allow agencies to combine resources and increase visibility, reinforcing the importance of attentive and responsible driving. Drivers are reminded to stay focused behind the wheel, avoid distractions, and follow traffic laws as enforcement efforts continue throughout the month.
