Montgomery County Transportation Chief to Lead Metrorail Safety Oversight

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) Director Chris Conklin has been elected chair of the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission (WMSC), a regional body that oversees safety for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s rail system.

Conklin, who was appointed to the commission three years ago, will now lead oversight efforts focused on safety planning, incident investigations, and system improvements.

The WMSC, an independent agency formed in 2017, is responsible for monitoring Metro’s safety performance and ensuring compliance with corrective action plans. County officials said Conklin’s leadership and experience in transportation policy and infrastructure will help guide continued improvements in transit safety across the region
