Montgomery Parks is inviting the community to come together this weekend for a free, inclusive event celebrating Autism Acceptance Month at Wheaton Regional Park. “Shine Brighter Together” will take place on Saturday, April 18 from 11am to 2pm at 2000 Shorefield Road in Wheaton. The family-friendly event is designed to bring together individuals of all abilities for an afternoon of sensory-friendly activities, performances, and hands-on experiences.
Organizers say the event is focused on creating a welcoming environment while also connecting families with resources available across Montgomery County. “Autism acceptance means creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, supported, and valued,” said Ashlyn Thompson, Montgomery Parks’ inclusion and outreach specialist. “Shine Brighter Together reflects our ongoing commitment to inclusion and ensures our parks are places where people of all abilities can connect, learn and have fun.”
Attendees can take part in a variety of activities tailored with accessibility in mind, including tree-climbing sessions, group music experiences, sensory play stations, and interactive art projects. Live performances by ArtStream are also scheduled throughout the event. In addition to activities, community partners and exhibitors will be on site with resource tables offering information on programs and services for individuals with autism and their families.
The event is presented in partnership with Montgomery County Recreation, The Arc Montgomery County, Autism Society of Maryland, and the cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg, along with several other local organizations. The event is free and open to the public. In case of inclement weather, a rain date is scheduled for Sunday, April 19.
