Walt Whitman High School principal Gregory Miller issued a letter to the school community Friday addressing a reported threat that prompted an increased police presence and changes to the school day.
According to the April 17 letter, shared on social media by Moderately MOCO, school leaders were informed Thursday evening of a possible threat to the Bethesda school building for Friday. Administrators immediately followed established safety protocols and notified Montgomery County Police and MCPS Systemwide Security. Miller said the school has been working closely with police, who have since investigated the reported threat and determined it to be unfounded.
Despite that determination, the school increased security measures out of caution. Both MCPS and Montgomery County Police personnel were present on campus Friday, with additional security expected in the coming days. As a precaution, the school also postponed a scheduled pep rally and operated on a regular bell schedule.
The letter acknowledged that messages circulating in the community caused anxiety and frustration among students, families, and staff. School officials commended those who reported the information and encouraged anyone with additional details to contact school administrators or Montgomery County Police. Community members can also report information anonymously through the Maryland Safe Schools Tip Line.
Miller emphasized the seriousness of making threats, noting that such behavior creates fear, disrupts school operations, and can result in disciplinary consequences under the MCPS Student Code of Conduct.
He also urged parents and caregivers to speak with students about responsible use of social media and phones, highlighting the risks associated with digital harassment, bullying, and threatening behavior.
School officials said they will continue monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with families as needed.
