Multiple Arrests Tied to Street Takeover and Shooting

Montgomery County Department of Police detectives have arrested three suspects in connection with a February 22, 2026 street takeover and car rally in Silver Spring that resulted in damage to two police cruisers.

According to MCPD, the incident began in Prince George’s County and moved into Montgomery County, where a large group of vehicles gathered near East West Highway and Connecticut Avenue, blocked traffic, and performed dangerous driving maneuvers. During the event, individuals exited their vehicles and obstructed officers from entering the intersection while activity continued.

Police said two marked cruisers were damaged during the incident, including one where an officer was inside when the rear window was broken and the windshield shattered. No injuries were reported. Two adults and one juvenile — Ayden Joseph Cline, Novorriya Gregory Smith Jr., and a 17-year-old from Laurel — have been charged with multiple offenses including reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, malicious destruction of property, and obstruction. One of the adult suspects is also accused of additional conduct during the incident, including indecent exposure.

In a separate April 4, 2026 incident, a fourth suspect, Hermes Matewere, was arrested in connection with a shooting during another car rally in Kensington. Police said two individuals suffered gunshot wounds inside a parking garage and transported themselves to a hospital. Detectives identified Matewere through surveillance video and charged him with multiple assault and firearms-related offenses. The adult suspects are being held without bond, while the juvenile was released to a parent or guardian.
