The Montgomery County Department of Transportation is advancing its spring sidewalk construction schedule, with approximately 10 miles of new sidewalks in planning or under construction across the county.
This includes 30 projects totaling six miles through the Annual Sidewalk Program, as well as additional projects under the Safe Routes to School program that combine sidewalk construction with safety improvements such as crosswalks and signage. The county is also proposing 2.7 miles of sidewalks to improve access to the future Purple Line, with an overall investment of nearly $10 million aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and connectivity.
Officials say the projects are designed to close gaps in the sidewalk network, improve access to schools, transit, and community resources, and support alternative transportation options. MCDOT evaluates hundreds of sidewalk requests each year using criteria that prioritize safety, proximity to key destinations, and equity considerations. Community input is also incorporated into project planning, with public feedback helping guide design decisions and determine whether projects move forward.
