Unknown Substance at MLK Middle School Determined to Be Sugar

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School notified families Friday that an “unknown substance” discovered in a student locker earlier in the day was ultimately determined to be sugar and posed no danger to students or staff.

According to a letter from Principal Brandi K. Overton dated April 24, the substance was found during a search and prompted a precautionary response. Montgomery County Police and MCPS Department of Systemwide Safety and Emergency Management were contacted following the discovery.

School officials later confirmed the substance was harmless. While there was no immediate danger, the school emphasized the importance of students reporting anything unusual and noted that safety remains a top priority. Families with questions were encouraged to contact the school’s administrative team.
