MCPS Updates Gender Identity Guidelines, Expands Parental Access to Student Information

Montgomery County Public Schools has announced an update to its Gender Identity Guidelines, citing recent legal developments that shift how schools handle student information and parental access.

The changes, which took effect April 27, 2026, emphasize expanded parental rights under Maryland law. Under the revised guidelines, school staff are now required to share information about a student’s gender identity if a parent or guardian specifically requests it, or if disclosure is otherwise legally required.

In its weekly message, MCPS reiterated that it continues to prohibit bullying, harassment, intimidation, and discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity. However, the district acknowledged that the updated policy represents a significant change in practice, particularly in how student privacy is handled in certain situations.

Officials noted that staff will still be expected to approach conversations with students carefully and with sensitivity, especially when students may have concerns about information being shared at home. The district stated that it is working to balance its legal obligations with its longstanding focus on student trust, privacy, and well-being.

MCPS also emphasized that it remains committed to maintaining an inclusive and supportive environment for all students and staff during the transition. See the revised guidelines here.
