The Montgomery County Department of Transportation has launched a countywide initiative to inspect and repair pedestrian signals, beginning with a “Pedestrian Signal Repair Blitz” targeting about 100 intersections in high-traffic areas such as Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Wheaton.
The effort comes after winter weather, including heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, damaged some crosswalk signals and poles, prompting crews to both repair known issues and proactively identify any unreported problems.
Officials say the initiative will expand to cover roughly 800 additional County-maintained intersections by the end of the year, with a focus on ensuring all pedestrian signals, including countdown timers and accessible pedestrian signals, are functioning properly. In a press release, County Executive Marc Elrich emphasized the importance of safe, reliable crossings, while transportation officials encouraged residents to report signal issues through the County’s 311 system or online portal.
