Walter Johnson High School Athletic Director Larry Hurd Jr. has announced that he will retire from Montgomery County Public Schools effective October 1, 2026.
Hurd shared the news in a letter to colleagues, students, and the Walter Johnson community, reflecting on a career that spanned multiple schools and decades in Montgomery County athletics.
“After a career filled with unforgettable moments and life-changing relationships, I am writing to share that I will be retiring from my position as Athletic Director at Walter Johnson High School and Montgomery County Public Schools,” Hurd wrote.
While stepping away from his administrative role, Hurd said he does not plan to leave athletics behind entirely and hopes to pursue another coaching opportunity in the future.
During his career, Hurd worked at several schools and programs across the county, including Beall Elementary, Poolesville, Clarksburg, the Blair G. Ewing Center, and Walter Johnson. He also reflected on the mentors, coaches, administrators, and family members who influenced his journey.
Among the accomplishments highlighted in his message were his inductions into the Poolesville and Quince Orchard Athletic Halls of Fame, though he noted that his time at Walter Johnson held a particularly meaningful place in his career.
“I believe that, together, we have elevated this entire program,” Hurd wrote. “Whether through campus branding or the privilege of hiring elite coaches, I am most proud of the relationships built with our students.”
Hurd said he plans to continue serving the Walter Johnson community through the start of the upcoming school year before officially retiring in October.
