MCPS Temporarily Disables Canvas Following Reported Cybersecurity Concern

Montgomery County Public Schools has temporarily disabled myMCPS Classroom (Canvas) following what the district described as a widespread cybersecurity concern involving the platform.

The move comes after education technology company Instructure, which operates Canvas, disclosed a data breach earlier this week in which hackers reportedly stole private student information, including names, personal email addresses, and messages exchanged between teachers and students, according to TechCrunch. Reports also indicate hackers may have compromised the platform again, this time defacing login pages for several schools using Canvas.

In a message sent to the community, MCPS stated, “[MCPS] myMCPS Classroom (Canvas) has been temporarily disabled due to a reported widespread cybersecurity concern involving the platform. Out of an abundance of caution, please do not attempt to log in while MCPS and the vendor assess the issue. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.”

Canvas is widely used by school systems to manage coursework, assignments, grades, and communication between students and teachers.
