Gene “Sonny” Raymond Lowery, a longtime Montgomery County resident and devoted member of the local baseball community, passed away May 16, 2026 at WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was 85.
Born March 26, 1941 in Corriganville, Maryland, Lowery was raised in Allegany County and graduated as valedictorian of his class at Mount Savage High School, where he also played on a championship baseball team.
After high school, Lowery moved to Montgomery County, where he built a longtime career as a carpenter and general contractor while remaining deeply connected to baseball throughout his life.
Lowery was a member of the Upper Montgomery Athletic Club (UMAC) for more than 40 years and also served as the organization’s past president. Friends and family described baseball as one of his lifelong passions, alongside his strong Christian faith, which they said guided every aspect of his life. His obituary can be seen here.
