Red Robin Set To Close Permanently on Sunday

Red Robin, located at 5582 Spectrum Drive at the Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick, will close on Sunday, May 24, after almost exactly fifteen years in business, a representative confirmed to The MoCoShow today.

The restaurant first opened on May 30, 2011. Gift cards will still be accepted at the nearby Germantown location in Montgomery County. Another local Red Robin, formerly located at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg, closed in 2014, more than a decade after the mall itself shut down in March 2023.

The closure comes as the company continues a broader restructuring effort. In late 2024, Red Robin announced plans to close approximately 70 underperforming locations as part of a cost-cutting initiative known as the “North Star plan,” aimed at improving profitability and bringing customers back into stores.

Despite the closures, the company has recently pointed to signs of improvement. According to Nation’s Restaurant News, Red Robin reported its strongest customer traffic results in three years during the first quarter of 2026. Same-store sales declined 0.6% year over year, while traffic fell 1.6% through April 19, both improvements from the previous quarter when traffic dropped 3.6%.

Red Robin is a family-friendly casual dining chain known for its gourmet burgers and “Bottomless Steak Fries.” Positioned between fast food and more traditional sit-down dining, the chain built a loyal following through extensive burger customization options, full-service bars, milkshakes, and a loud, nostalgic atmosphere often filled with pop culture décor.
