The 15 Best Places to Live in Maryland for 2026, According to U.S. News

U.S. News & World Report has released its 2026 Best Places to Live rankings, highlighting 15 Maryland communities recognized for factors including affordability, quality of life, job market strength, and overall desirability (list below).

Howard County claimed two of the top three spots on the statewide list, with Ellicott City ranked as the best place to live in Maryland for 2026, followed by Bethesda at No. 2 and Columbia at No. 3.

Montgomery County had the strongest overall showing in the rankings, with five communities making the top 15: Bethesda (#2), Rockville (#4), Germantown (#7), Gaithersburg (#8), and Silver Spring (#10).

The rankings were compiled using data from Applied Geographic Solutions (AGS), the U.S. Census Bureau, Department of Commerce, Federal Reserve, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and other state and local sources. U.S. News evaluated cities using four primary categories: Value (28%), Quality of Life (27%), Desirability (24%), and Job Market (21%).

The methodology considered factors including housing affordability, healthcare access, education quality, crime rates, commute times, air quality, cultural amenities, weather, unemployment rates, and median household income. U.S. News also used public survey responses from Americans nationwide to determine how heavily each category should be weighted in the final rankings.
