The Montgomery County Department of Transportation has released updated design guidelines that will govern future infrastructure construction projects throughout Montgomery County.
The new standards will apply to new construction as well as infrastructure that is reconstructed or replaced, and include updated Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for sidewalks, driveways, curbs, ramps, bike paths, and permeable pavement.
County officials said the guidelines will be used by government agencies, developers, and utility companies to ensure future roadway and right-of-way projects comply with federal, state, and local regulations while improving accessibility. The updates incorporate standards from the Montgomery County Complete Streets Design Guidelines, the U.S. Access Board Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines, and the Montgomery County Accessible Design Guide.
Marc Elrich said the guidelines are intended to create a clearer path to accessibility compliance and help foster a more inclusive community. MCDOT Director Chris Conklin said the changes include updated requirements for sidewalk and pathway widths, as well as driveway ramp and sidewalk slopes to improve navigation for people who use mobility aids. Additional updates covering county roads, Flash Bus Rapid Transit, drainage, and landscaping are expected to be released in the coming months.
