Residents will have the opportunity to help shape the final design of a new public art installation planned for David Scull Park, between First St. and E Gude Dr. in East Rockville.
According to the City of Rockville, community engagement efforts will begin in fall 2027 for “Shared Passage,” a large-scale sculpture selected as part of the ongoing David Scull Park Improvement Project. The artwork will be installed at the entrance of the 4.1-acre park, located at 1133 First Street.
The sculpture, designed by CJRDesign, will stand approximately 18 feet tall and 25 feet wide. Constructed of steel and colorful acrylic panels, the piece was selected following a national call for proposals and a competitive review process.
City officials say community feedback will play a role in determining several final design elements, including the arrangement of the sculpture’s colorful acrylic panels and arches, as well as the potential addition of solar-powered lighting. “Shared Passage” is intended to serve as a welcoming gateway into the park while creating an interactive visual experience for visitors.
The artwork’s fabrication and installation will be coordinated with the broader David Scull Park Improvement Project schedule. Funding for the sculpture comes through Rockville’s Incorporation of Works of Art in Public Architecture program, which is managed by the city’s Arts and Culture Program staff.
Residents of the David Scull and East Rockville communities will be invited to participate in the engagement process, with additional details expected to be announced by the city closer to fall 2027.
