After a $10.2 million transformation, DICK’S Sporting Goods is officially ready to unveil its new House of Sport at Rio Lakefront. The reimagined store at 2 Grand Corner Avenue in Gaithersburg will celebrate its grand opening with a three-day “House Party” from Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7, featuring athlete appearances, giveaways, interactive experiences, and special promotions. We have first-look photos below.
The festivities actually begin Thursday evening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6pm featuring Washington Mystics center Lauren Betts. Special guest appearances continue throughout the weekend with Washington Capitals star Tom Wilson scheduled to appear Friday from 6pm-7:30pm and Washington Commanders linebacker Sonny Styles appearing Saturday from noon-1:30pm.
Visitors will have opportunities to take part in several giveaways during the celebration. The first 100 people in line each morning will receive a mystery gift card, with every card guaranteed to be a winner. Customers can also receive $10 off an in-store purchase of $50 or more during the event. Rio is also giving away a $300 gift card through its text club.
As we’ve previously reported, the Gaithersburg location recently completed a massive $10.2 million renovation, converting the traditional DICK’S Sporting Goods store into the retailer’s next-generation House of Sport concept.
The immersive retail format blends traditional sporting goods shopping with hands-on athletic experiences and interactive attractions. Features include a rock climbing wall, indoor track, golf simulators, and other activity-focused spaces designed to encourage customers to test products and engage with sports inside the store.
The grand opening weekend will also feature the retailer’s popular Expression Lab, where visitors can customize gear through activities such as shoe charm bars, tote heat pressing, and laser etching. Guests can also participate in “Unlock the DICK’S Vault,” an interactive prize challenge offering additional giveaway opportunities throughout the weekend.
The Gaithersburg location is part of DICK’S growing national expansion of the House of Sport concept, which company leaders say has helped attract customers from greater distances, increase store visits, and encourage longer shopping experiences.
The store remained open throughout construction, with major changes including the removal of the building’s escalators and the addition of wide staircases connecting the two levels.
